When it comes to buying a fireplace for your home, it is important to do your research to make sure you are getting the fireplace you want.  There are many things that you should consider about your fireplace.  Today I want to discuss these different things and give an example in the Vermont Castings Montpelier Wood Burning Fireplace.

Type of Fuel.  There are different ways a fireplace can be fueled.  Among them are wood burning, natural gas, electric, and coal (which are pretty uncommon).  The model we are discussing is a wood burning fireplace.  It is important to note which size of logs can be used inside of the fireplace so you can plan for it in the future.  This particular model can hold logs that range from 18”-22” in length.

Heating Capacity.  It is also important to know the amount of space that a particular fireplace can heat.  Most fireplaces should tell you the capacity so that you can know which fireplace to purchase.  The fireplace we are talking about can warm up to 1,500 square feet-about enough to warm up a family room and another room adjacent to it.

Efficiency.  Efficiency is another important factor when buying a fireplace.  Proper certifications and fuel use should be considered while searching for a new fireplace.  Our wood burning model is EPA certified and generates more heat by using around 74% less wood than other basic models.  In addition, this model has a burn time of up to 10 hours, helping you to stay warmer, longer.

Power Source.  Some fireplaces run off of electricity in some way or another while others do not use it at all.  Electricity can be useful when you want to regulate the temperature in the area that you are heating.  An electric fan on a fireplace can distribute heat as needed to keep an area well heated.  However, if a power outage occurs, the fan will not work and the room may not be heated to the temperature that you want.  The Montpelier model does not have any power chords going to it, making it easy to stay warm during power outages.

Quality Construction.  Some fireplaces are built from low-grade materials that can be easily damaged and can be hard to maintain.  The fireplace we have been talking about is made from cast iron, a very durable metal.  In addition, there are wheels are the rear of the fireplace, making it easy to install and move.  There is also a removable internal baffle which makes maintenance and cleaning easier than other fireplaces.

Look/Style.  This topic is not so technical, but still very important to many people.  The way the fireplace looks can really give character to a room.  Many fireplaces come in different styles, finishes (colors), and have the choice of optional surround units.  This wood burning stove comes in three different finishes: Biscuit, Ebony Black, or Majolica Brown.  There are also seven different surrounds that can be purchased to give your fireplace the unique style you are looking for.  After you select a fireplace, you can install it yourself or have a professional do it.
